MirandaNet Fellowship Profiles (MirandaNet Archive - as of March 2015)
An ancient graduate in mathematics (MA Oxon) and in computer science (MTech Brunel) I have taught in 11-19 secondary schools (grammar, comprehensive and independent), Further Education, teacher training and Higher Education. For the last 10 years or so I have been an independent educational IT consultant advising a number of companies and organisations both in the UK and internationally. I have given keynote speeches at a number of international conferences (ICTMT, ATCM, GeoGebra, T-cubed) as well as chairing and organising others. Currently my major concern is with technological education in schools - sometimes known as STEM, MST, STEAM or STEM+. I chair a working group of schools' and STEM subject teachers' professional associations (SSAWG) which has produced a sustainable, grass-roots and joined-up strategy for schools (SySTEMiC) to respond to the current skills crisis threatening UK's economic competitiveness. I am also working with colleagues on the establishment of a Centre for Innovation in Technological Education (ccite.org) in Cambridge.
Learners and teachers using authentic tools to solve problems, undertake projects and design artefacts. I am particularly interested in the use of tools to support mathematical modelling, simulation, data-logging, robotics, design etc.
A TTA/Microsoft Partners in Learning (PiL) project using IT as a catalyst for cross-curricular work. A Texas Instruments project using TI-Nspire handhelds in mathematics and science. A QCA project "Enhancing Mathematics For All Learners". Now working on EU-funded projects such as iTEC through Fiturelab & Promethean. Supporting the Intel Maths and STEM educators community web-site.
