Personal Statement

Personal Statement

My name is Gerrit-Jan, but prefer being called Gerrit. I was born in Florida (RSA), and spent my school going years in Krugersdorp on the West Rand.

I studied at a number of universities: first degree in Accounting at Rand Afrikaans University (now part of University of Johannesburg), B Compt (Hons) at UNISA, M Ed at University of Pretoria.  I am now busy with a PhD at North West University in Potchefstroom.  I completed Accounting articles at Deloitte Haskins & Sells (now Deloitte & Touche), then started teaching Accountancy at Technicon Witwatersrand (also now part of University of Johannesburg) – I did that on and off for probably 12 years, interrupted by a stint at Syspro, a software company producing the award-winning Impact Encore suite of financial software.  It was while I was there that I started on my M Ed, which ultimately enabled me to land my current job as a Senior Instructional Designer at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria.

I do online facilitation of learning on a part-time basis, mainly facilitating a course on online facilitation developed as an OER by a team from the University of Cape Town.  The course is loosely based on Gilly Salmon’s  5 stage online facilitation model.
