MirandaNet Fellowship Profiles (MirandaNet Archive - as of March 2015)
I am a high school science teacher interested in implementing ICT strategies that enhance learning. I am sceptical of many ICT-based educational strategies. I am concerned about the current hype distracting educators from actual improvements in learning. However, like all teaching strategies I come across, I am willing to try many different ICT-based strategies in my classroom to see what actually works for me. Currently I am exploring ways to make my IWB enhance learning, using Google Docs to encourage collaborative learning, trying out aspects of a flipped classroom model with my senior classes and trying to put together a self-diagnostic spreadsheet/database activity for my Chemistry students. I am keen to learn more about game based learning and collaborative video activities but am finding working with a BYOD system challenging in terms of finding compatible/comparable cross-platform software. I have also been thinking about the ethics of BYODD & 1:1 models in schools. Questions I am still pondering include: Is it right to force students/parents to be customers of a certain company? (particularly now that this forces them not only to buy the device but also be customers of that particular brands 'store'). Are such models effectively advertising to children & is this ethical?
Hopefully membership of MirandaNet will help me with these questions and gide me toward becoming a more effect 21st century educator.
